I recently had the great honor to contribute with a series of 14 charcoal illustrations to a new documentary about a Romanian Christian communist prisoner - priest Ilarion Felea (now a canonized as a saint by the Romanian Orthodox Church).

My illustrations had the purpose of depicting some of the most dramatic scenes in his life, which the producers feared may not have been done justice with a reenactment with actors. I was overjoyed to contribute to this project, as I myself am deeply inspired by all of the Christian marthyrs who lived and died for their faith in the gruesome tortures of the Communist prisons.

I created the illustrations using charcoal powder on paper and my aim was to represent the characters in a slightly stylized fashion that focus more on the spiritual essence of the scene rather than the realism of perspective and proportions.
