Bringing Alebrijes to Life: Christina Rodriguez-Unalt’s Pedro and the Monster Eaters Earns Acclaim

Since its release, Christina has been actively sharing the book with children in her New Jersey community. In the week following its debut, she visited several elementary schools, presenting Pedro and the Monster Eaters to over 200 students. She also hosted interactive readings and behind-the-scenes discussions about her illustration process at Barnes & Noble in Brick, NJ, and Watchung Booksellers – The Kids’ Room in Montclair, NJ.

Christina also showcased her work at the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) New Jersey conference, where she participated in a Published and Listed (PAL) panel. In addition, she led a workshop titled Illustration Bootcamp: Tips and Tricks to Advancing Your Children’s Book Portfolio, providing valuable insights for aspiring illustrators.

Last fall, she moderated a panel for the Latinx Kidlit Book Festival, where she interviewed celebrated author-illustrators Edel Rodriguez, Ellia Ana Hill, and Nomar Perez. Together, they discussed their latest books, answered audience questions, and engaged in live drawing sessions inspired by audience prompts. You can watch the recorded panel here: https://www.crodillustration.com/news.

The book has since received glowing reviews. School Library Journal praises it, stating:

"Kids will relate to Pedro’s story, seeing themselves as contributors to their family’s day-to-day life, struggling with nightmares, and using creativity and art to solve a conflict. Unalt strikes a great balance, making parts of the story truly terrifying while showing how the otherworldly alebrijes sprang from the boy’s imagination. An engaging and bright treatment of a Mexican sculptor that will inspire burgeoning artists—purchase this bilingual book for elementary collections."

The South Sound Book Review Council also recommends the book, highlighting:

"Purchase this book for your library for a variety of reasons—the subject matter, dual-language presentation, and the beautiful illustrations. Students will be curious to explore more about the artist and the medium after such a wonderful introduction."

Most recently, Pedro and the Monster Eaters received Honorable Mention in the 2024 Premio Campoy-Ada de la Academia Norteamericana de la Lengua Española in the children’s nonfiction category. This prestigious bilingual award, presented every two years by the North American Academy of the Spanish Language (ANLE), recognizes outstanding children's and young adult literature in Spanish.

With its rich storytelling and vibrant artwork, Pedro and the Monster Eaters / Pedro y los devoradores de monstruos is an excellent choice for parents and educators looking to inspire young readers through art and culture.
