Character Sheet: Molly Malone – Pose Exploration

This character sheet was created as part of a larger illustration project inspired by the Irish folk song Molly Malone. The piece stems from a personal tradition of singing this song nightly to my son as an infant. As well as my desire to create a picture book that pairs beautifully with the music while gently introducing children to the theme of mortality. I envisioned a story that softens the song’s tragic ending through warmth, empathy, and visual storytelling.
To bring Molly to life, I developed a series of poses and expressions that explore her personality, emotional range, and movement. These studies helped me understand her character more deeply, from her quiet resilience and pride in her work, to her spirited interactions within the Victorian-era market. Each pose was designed to reflect her humanity and heart, making her relatable and engaging for young readers.
Molly’s design blends historical research with imaginative storytelling, incorporating anthropomorphic elements that evoke charm and accessibility. Her gestures and body language were carefully considered to build emotional resonance and consistency throughout the narrative. This sheet served as a foundational tool in crafting a character who could guide children through a story of life, loss, and legacy with grace and warmth.
