Turning Learning into Joyful, Hands-On Play

The Beginning

Every project has a spark.

This one started when I was approached by an exceptional and inspiring team of educational experts from Los Angeles: Purposeful Play.

Even before opening the brief, the name itself felt like an invitation.

Anything that speaks the language of play immediately puts me in a creative, curious, ready-to-experiment state of mind.

Their vision was clear and ambitious:

to create a rich, engaging box of games and educational activities designed to support children aged 3–5 in their journey toward kindergarten — through play, exploration, and hands-on discovery.

Concept & Creative Direction

From the very beginning, the goal was to transform learning into an experience of joy.

Drawing on my long-standing experience in illustration, game design, and educational materials, I began developing a visual and interactive language that would feel:

• Lively and vibrant

• Clear and intuitive for young children

• Playful, but never chaotic

• Educational without feeling instructional

Each activity was designed to invite curiosity, movement, and problem-solving — encouraging children to learn by doing, not by memorizing.

The Development Process

This project unfolded over approximately five months of intensive work.

Day by day, week by week, alongside my long-time trusted assistant, we developed more than 55 activities — each one carefully crafted, tested, refined, and visually brought to life.

It was a joyful process, but also a demanding one.

The number of activities was significant, and the timeline was tight.

Every element required balance:

• clarity and playfulness
• educational value and visual delight

• consistency and surprise

We accepted the challenge fully and worked with focus, energy, and enthusiasm to meet the deadline without compromising quality.

Design & Illustration

The visual identity of the box was conceived to feel:

• Warm and welcoming

• Colorful and engaging

• Structured yet imaginative

Each illustrated element supports the activity it belongs to, guiding children naturally through play.

Color, shape, rhythm, and visual cues work together to make learning intuitive and enjoyable.

The Outcome

The result was deeply rewarding.

A happy and enthusiastic client in Los Angeles.

A product that truly reflects the philosophy of purposeful, playful learning.

And the honor of becoming a 2026 NAPPA Awards Winner.

A Personal Note

Every long project carries its own set of challenges — creative, technical, and human.

This one was no exception.

But each challenge overcome becomes part of the story.

And every successful outcome strengthens my love for this work.

This project represents not only months of dedication and collaboration, but also one more meaningful step in a journey built on creativity, trust, and the belief that play is one of the most powerful tools for learning.

Magnetic Sorting Board

Designed to support early learning through interaction, this activity combines bold color, simple structure, and magnetic elements to encourage independent play.

By placing the colored tiles onto the board, children practice sorting, spatial awareness, and fine motor control — all through an intuitive and engaging experience.

Design & Educational Perspective

Instruction & Play Guide

The instruction manual is designed as a supportive guide for parents, clearly explaining each activity and its educational purpose

Rather than offering a single set of rules, it presents multiple playful variations for each game, encouraging creativity, flexibility, and connection. Parents become active participants in their child’s learning journey, transforming playtime into shared discovery.

Learning Through Play

Play is not a pause from learning — it is learning.

When children learn through play, they engage deeply, think creatively, and develop essential skills that go far beyond academics. Purposeful play transforms experiences into understanding, making learning active, memorable, and joyful.
