Kai, Otto and the Game of No Return: Page 2 - Enter the Game World

For this brief, I was asked to illustrate a narrative sequence featuring two boys, Kai and Otto, aged 12–14. Kai is shy, thoughtful, and intelligent, while Otto is outgoing, sporty, and obsessed with gaming. The story explores the moment their worlds collide—literally. This page sets the tone with a glimpse into the immersive game world.
In this full-page illustration, the audience is introduced to the immersive game realm Otto is pulled into - a surreal, teal-hued world that evokes the sensation of being underwater. Hair and leaves drift as if suspended, while glowing pink orbs cast warmth onto oversized sculptures of aquatic creatures, including a whale, axolotl, and fish. A distant path of floating stones leads to a mysterious waterfall, hinting at future challenges. This piece contrasts a close-up of Otto’s expression with a wide-scale view of the vast environment, emphasizing both the wonder and vulnerability of a lone player navigating an unfamiliar world. Designed to showcase atmosphere, scale, and emotional storytelling through composition.
