Talwinder Anant Interview

Talwinder Anant

Children's Illustrator

Who or what made you want to become an illustrator?

I’ve been passionate about drawing since childhood, which naturally led me to study art formally at an institute. Living in a creative home where my husband is also an artist art and visual storytelling are a huge part of my daily life. My journey into children’s books really began with my very first picture book project. Seeing how artwork could bring a story to life for young readers was magical, and over 10 published books later, that same passion continues to drive my work every day.

Was creativity part of your childhood?

Yes, absolutely! Creativity was at the heart of my childhood. I was constantly drawing, loved participating in art and traditional Rangoli competitions, and often took home first place! My teachers and classmates always turned to me for any school artwork, and that early encouragement really built my confidence to pursue illustration as my lifelong career.

Do you keep a sketch book?

I always carry a sketchbook with me. Sketching is my way of capturing life and creating lasting memories. Whenever I go out with my husband and our toddler, I love sketching them amidst beautiful landscapes. For me, drawing a moment imprints it deep in my heart far more than a photograph ever could. It keeps my creative eye sharp and feeds directly into the warmth of my illustrations.

What do you hope children take away from your drawings?

"Above all, I hope children experience pure joy and warmth when reading my books! My goal is to create visuals so rich, playful, and engaging that kids simply don't want to put the book down and keep asking their parents, 'Read this one again!' Beyond the big smiles, I want my art to ignite their curiosity and help them discover hidden details and emotions every single time they turn a page.

Outline your dream project.

My dream project is to create a picture book series deeply rooted in nature and wildlife. I have a huge love for animals and the outdoors, so I’d love to illustrate stories that celebrate the wonders of the natural world. My goal is to build rich, lush environments that inspire children to love, protect, and feel connected to nature and all its living creatures.

Yes! I had the privilege of conducting a workshop and speaking event hosted by Wacom. Yes, music is a huge part of my creative process! I love listening to Studio Ghibli soundtracks for their peaceful, whimsical warmth, as well as Hans Zimmer’s movie scores for depth and focus. This combination brings a wonderful sense of calm and helps me stay completely immersed in the worlds I’m creating.

How important is it for you to be part of a creative community of people?

Being part of a creative community is vital for my work. I love connecting with people from all artistic fields Like- artists, musicians, dancers, and writers.
