Nadia Ronquillo illustrated "Chiquita's Big Day"
Chiquita, the baby turtle, is nestled warmly in her nest and dreaming of the day when she and her siblings will hatch and swim out to sea. She suddenly realizes that she will face predators even before she is born. With the help and encouragement of her siblings, Chiquita faces her fears and together they look forward to a great adventure.
The story, along with Nadia Ronquillo's vibrant illustrations, bring the hatching action to life. The setting where the story takes place is San Francisco beach in Mexico, and the Sea of Cortez, which Jacques-Yves Cousteau (famous oceanographer and conservationist) referred to as "the aquarium of the world." Its beautiful landscape and sunset are wonderfully depicted in this adorable book about sibling support and new beginnings.
The entire story is written in both English and in Spanish to make the story available to as many children and parents as possible to encourage bilingual education, and because the author values conservation.
