My gouache and colored pencil portrait of Rachel Carson was selected for inclusion in the exhibit My America: An Illustrated Experience at the Heinz History Center, an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution and the largest history museum in Pennsylvania.

In honor of the nation’s 250th anniversary, the Heinz History Center has partnered with the Pittsburgh Society of Illustrators to create this exhibition that explores the question, “What does America mean to you?” Featuring 59 original works of art by 35 illustrators, the show uses the power of illustration to reflect on ideals associated with the American Revolution and the pillars at the heart of the nation’s founding—freedom, equality, justice, and opportunity. I chose to illustrate Rachel Carson as a celebration of important women in our country's history. She was one of the most influential marine biologists and environmental activists, whose achievements ignited the environmental movement and lead to increased public concern and activism. She also was a true role model to women in science—a trailblazer, paving the way for other women to pursue careers in science and conservation.

The exhibition is open to the public in the Barensfeld Gallery of the Heinz History Center, and on view through Sept. 8, 2026.
