Michelle Hazelwood Hyde
Children's Illustrator
Who or what made you want to become an illustrator?
I have always loved to draw. Copying cartoons or drawing from "How to Draw" books was how I spent my free-time. When I was in 1st grade, a friend paid me 20 cents for a Ms Pac-Man drawing. She was happy, I had snack money, I was hooked.
How and why did you decide to pursue illustration as your career?
I had to purse illustration. Don't get me wrong, I was scared. It is really not a parent's dream to hear their child tell them they want to be an artist when they grow up. But I couldn't imagine not drawing everyday of my life.
Did you attend art school or undertake any other formal artistic training?
Yes, I have a BFA in Illustration from Ringling College of Art and Design. I don't think you have to go to art school to be an artist. College is so expensive these days. I feel bad for kids. Plus there are so many great online classes. But I did love Ringling, and my experience in Sarasota FL.
Where do you currently live and where did you grow up?
I currently live in Birmingham, AL, but I grew up in Philadelpia, PA. It is really funny that I am from the North, since many of the books I have illustrated are about Southern culture. I love it!
Have you always loved to draw?
Yes!! I found so much comfort in drawing. I have an older brother and sister. They both seemed to have it together when it came to school. Way smarter than myself. But I could draw. Drawing was like a super power.
Do you keep a sketch book?
I love sketching. I always carry a sketch book with me. You never know when you'll see something you must capture. I often reference my sketches in my illustration. They have been great resource for me.
What advice would you offer someone just starting out as a children’s illustrator?
Draw, draw, draw and be kind to yourself. If you illustrate things that bring you joy, you will shine. It took me many years to realize that.
