The challenge as an illustrator was learning about how all the adaptive equipment the main character uses actually works – and depicting it in a way that would make sense to other children who use it. It was a true collaboration with the author, who also consulted on the equipment, and was inspired to write the book by her daughter, who was born with spina bifida.
