A Very Rainy Day by Darla Prudhomme Illustrated by Tom Arvis
This news item is to showcase the book "A Very Rainy Day" by Darla Prudhomme, whose husband, Bill Robinson commissioned me to illustrate, format and help self-publish his wife's story through Kindle Direct Publishing and their own publishing business, One For the Books, LLC last year. It depicts the story of a single mom and her young son, Tommy, who live through a flood together, based on Darla Prudhomme's personal experiences, and deals with the preparations, tribulations, and displacements a family typically experiences when surviving a flood. This book is educational as well as entertaining. Having lived through two floods myself in my youth, I found this book to be particularly challenging and interesting to draw, relying on my own personal experiences. This book included a front and back cover illustration and design by me, and all 25 interior and cover illustrations were penciled and inked by hand, then scanned into my computer and colored digitally in PhotoShop layers. I was also commissioned to produce a black and white coloring book version. This book was also the first commission I received, based on Bill Robinson finding my portfolio here on ChildrensIllustrators.com, and, not to brag, but it paid for my membership fee about 10 times over. Not bad for a first CI commission!
