Who or what made you want to become an illustrator?

I always loved to draw when I was a kid, but when I got into high school, I read an article by Fred Brenner in Artists Magazine about the art of illustrating for children's books. That led me to go to art school to get my BFA in Illustration. I spent a decade as a print designer for magazines and newspapers. I was also a freelance illustrator. Then I transitioned into a career of being an art teacher. I love teaching art and sharing my passion for making. I'm a part-time K-8 art teacher, freelance children's book author, and illustrator.

What is your favourite medium to work with and why?

I love cut paper and depth! I create tiny worlds that capture the magic and joy of childhood for clients. These worlds are hand-painted and cut from paper, allowing the viewer to feel like they are part of that moment. I illustrate subtle narratives and emotions. The dimensional quality of the work is captured using photography, and I provide digital files to clients.

What do you hope children take away from your drawings?

I've been fortunate to be invited into schools to speak with children about my art and teach, and it's a huge honor. The children pick up on the details and the storytelling in my artwork. They tell me how much they want to play with it and take it home. It means a lot to have them appreciate the work behind it all.
