Malin Gyllensvaan Interview

Malin Gyllensvaan

Children's Illustrator

Do you have a favourite picture book or recall one of the first picture books you saw?

I love the illustrator Carson Ellis and especially her book "Du iz Tak" It's a beautiful and clever book.

What does a typical day in the studio look like for you?

I typically start my day around 8.30. I begin with thinking what I need to do AND what I feel like doing. Sometimes I start painting straight away and some days I dig into admin and stuff I really need to send out. Because then I can put my mind at rest and focus on the fun part (painting) when it´s done.

I have lunch around 12.00 and might go for a walk with a friend or on my own. Then I get stressed and count the hours until the kids are back home around 16.00...the hours never seem to be enough to get everything done.

Then we spend time together and if it's not my night to put the kids to sleep, I very often continue working.

What’s the best piece of advice anyone has ever given you?

Jesper Waldersten a brilliant swedish artist once told me "Be brave enough to say no" I try to live by it...but I find it difficult sometimes.

But I must say some of the best choices I have made in my working life is when I have said no or resigned from jobs.

What are some of your favourite subjects to draw?

I love flowers, plants and animals, not very unique but nature is very close to my heart.
