How and why did you decide to pursue illustration as your career?
For me, becoming an illustrator was an organic and unpredictable process. It's one of those things I never imagined 14 years ago, but I'm incredibly grateful it happened. When I finished high school, I initially aimed to become a veterinarian. However, I eventually shifted my focus to graphic design. During my studies, I began drawing and found a way to combine a childhood love of discovering characters in everyday life, my passion for animals, and the tools graphic design provided. I fell in love with blending these passions, which led me to become an illustrator and tell stories through images.
Where do you currently live and where did you grow up?
I am based in London, UK, and I am originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina.
What was your first commission as a professional illustrator?
I love this question because it brings back some fond memories. My first commission as a professional illustrator wasn't for publishing but for children's apparel. I was tasked with creating a design featuring a cute little bear. This exciting project allowed me to blend my passion for whimsical characters and illustration. While I wish I had a photo to share, this commission was a significant milestone in my career and solidified my love for creating designs that bring joy to children and the young at heart.
Do you keep a sketch book?
Yes, I do! Currently, I have three ongoing sketchbooks. Last year, I started sketching on the iPad, but I still love the feeling of sketching with a pencil.
Have you ever thought about trying out a different technique or a different style?
Absolutely! I find myself experimenting a lot with papercut and mixed media techniques that include glitter, resin, and acrylics at the moment. I love exploring new methods and materials to keep my work fresh and exciting.
What is your favourite children’s book and why?
I have many favourites! But one that I always loved as a kid is Strega Nona by Tomie dePaola. I grew up with the book and the accompanying cassette that told the audio story. I loved the magical elements in the story, the song, and the little details in the illustrations. It always took me to a happy place.
What would you say is a distinguishing feature of your artwork?
A distinguishing feature of my artwork is its whimsical and friendly nature. I love creating cute animals and colorful, happy designs that bring joy to children and the young at heart.
Animals feature heavily in children’s books – do you have a pet?
Back in Argentina, I have a dog brother named Mortimer, whom I miss dearly. I've had many pets in the past, and they've always been a great source of inspiration. From my tiny hamsters to the chubby guinea pigs, and now Morty, each one has contributed to the whimsical animal characters in my artwork.
