Crista Kathleen McGinley Interview

Crista Kathleen McGinley

Children's Illustrator

Did you attend art school or undertake any other formal artistic training?

I earned my degree in Illustration from Ringling College of Art + Design. I discovered my passion for creating illustrations for children's stories, and I've been dedicated to that path ever since.

Was creativity part of your childhood?

Creativity runs in my family and I'm lucky to have had encouragement at an early age. I grew up watching Saturday morning cartoons and then spent my afternoons drawing on every piece of paper. There was also nothing quite like the joy of opening a new box of crayons, especially with a sharpener tucked in the back!

Which books from your own childhood really stand out?

I love this question because it brings back wonderful memories. Halloween is my favorite holiday! I loved reading Halloween-themed picture books, getting dressed up, and carving my pumpkin for the big night. One of my favorite picture books is "How Spider Saved Halloween" by Robert Kraus, published in 1988.

What do you hope children take away from your drawings?

My wish is for children to see themselves in my illustrations, and inspire a sense of wonder and curiosity. I hope my artwork brings happiness and takes children on an adventure.

What do you do in your spare time?

I enjoy spending my time at home, baking tasty treats, or getting lost in a captivating book. I also cherish the moments I share with my kids when we explore the outdoors or visit new places; it refreshes my mind and fills me with inspiration.

Which area of children’s publishing excites you the most?

I would have to say the storytelling and the little details I add to the illustrations. As a child, I always looked forward to getting a lollipop as a special treat after my haircut. I hope this little monkey enjoys his banana treat!

What advice would you offer someone just starting out as a children’s illustrator?

Draw and keep drawing. Take time to observe and study everything around you—whether it's everyday life or the beauty of nature. Go for hikes, visit the zoo to sketch the animals, head to a park to draw the dogs, and most importantly, enjoy the process!

Which project are you most proud of?

I'm a versatile illustrator, and I enjoy working on various projects. My work includes illustrating picture books, coloring books, activity books, and board books. Additionally, I've designed artwork for toys, playing cards, puzzles, stickers, and children's magazines.

What’s one thing that most people don’t know about you?

I absolutely love coffee! My favorite beverage is sweet iced coffee. However, there's something wonderful about enjoying a warm cup on a chilly fall day.
