Nelson Beats the Odds Series and Facing Tough Issues
It has been a wonderful experience to work with the author, Ronnie Sidney II with Creative Medicine on this series of graphic novel / comic books each tackling tough issues children face today. In chaotic, tough times, it's good to know that you are not alone in facing hard times and tough issues like learning disabilities, family problems, bullying, gun violence and cop shootings.
Illustrating these books has been quite a departure from the usual lighthearted games, toys and books I normally design and illustrate through my company, Imagine That! Design. It has been hard at times producing images that are so sensitive with issues that are such hot topics, but I believe in educating our population, teaching our children, showing them they are not alone, always with the hope of making our world a better place for everyone.
Rest in Peace RaShawn received some kick back from consumers and the author had a time getting schools and librarians to buy it with an image of a gun on the cover. At the same time Colin Kaepernick was making a stand by kneeling at football games, so Ronnie wanted to create a new cover with RaShawn as a football player kneeling with his teammates in solidarity.
The author and I have briefly discussed the next book, which I should be starting this summer. Stay tuned for updates.
