illustrator - portfolio - Kuhn, Jesse - Tub Pirate-The good ol' days of hangin' out in that old clawfoot tub
and prunin' up for hours on end!
illustrator - portfolio - Kuhn, Jesse - Kick the Daisies-"Ahhh, the carbon footprint...this sloth obviously forgot to
stop and smell the daisies. Better be careful, a couple of
these little fellas look like they could uproot and come
after ya."
illustrator - portfolio - Kuhn, Jesse - Fly Fishing-"He ran to the shore's edge and plopped himself down.
Completely caught up in the excitement of the
moment, he never realized that he had forgotten to bait
the hooks. As he sat and dangled his feet off the edge
of the world waiting for a bite, he pondered weather or
not he really could make a fish fly. He stared at the
fish, and they all stared right back, almost as confused
as he. The worms on the other hand had no intention of
waiting around for him to come to his senses. They
lurched over the side of the rusty coffee can one by one
and made a slithering run for less hostile grounds. "
illustrator - portfolio - Kuhn, Jesse - Spot Showers-This was done for the Illustration Friday topic "Pet Peeves".
One of mine is unexpected "spot showers". So annoying
when one big ogre cloud rolls over the hill and just dumps
on you on a perfectly beautiful day otherwise. Then it gets
all nasty and humid once it's passed.
illustrator - portfolio - Kuhn, Jesse - Potato Island-This is for the Illustration Friday "Garden" topic. Funny
how a word can transport you back in time when you
really start thinking about it. My mom used to let me
grow potato plants in jars on our window sills as a kid
(bless her, cause they start to stink after awhile). They
grow pretty quickly so I used to get really excited to
look at them each day when I got home from school to
see the progress. Then at night my mind would wander
beyond the science of things and imagine the little
people that showed up during the day to water the
vines while I was away at school.

So this is the illustration I came up with after that
thought.
illustrator - portfolio - Kuhn, Jesse - Poor Little Calamari-This poor little squid named Calamari failed to notice he
had gotten to close to the shoreline while rolling and
playing in the tides. Those pesky old seagulls were up
to no good again and snatched him up out of the
oceans edge. Now they all gawk and flutter about
staring at the poor little fellow with their beady little
eyes.
illustrator - portfolio - Kuhn, Jesse - Low Voltage-I used to just have a blast licking batteries as a kid,
thought it was the funniest thing in the world when
they
would zap my tongue. Ahhhhhh, the things we did to
pass
the time in our youth. Enjoy!
illustrator - portfolio - Kuhn, Jesse - Giant Technicolor Nice Monster-It's a giant, technicolor, nice-wide-monster that has come
to the city to help save all these simple and drab little
lemming-like folks from a burning building.
illustrator - portfolio - Kuhn, Jesse - Heavy-Apparently this big guy smashed the little fish's home and
he's not too happy about it.
illustrator - portfolio - Kuhn, Jesse - Kitchen Chemistry Kal from The Quirkles series-Katie and Kizzy Kangaroo couldn’t believe their eyes.
The mix had changed from a liquid to a solid in front of
them! The salt helped lower the temperature so the
liquid cream could freeze into solid ice cream.

Kal explained that there is much science in cooking as
food changes when things are mixed together, heated,
or cooled.
illustrator - portfolio - Kuhn, Jesse - Inquisitive Inman spread from The Quirkles series-When Inquisitive Inman arrived at the inn, Ippy was crying.
“I am ill and itchy,†cried Ippy Iguana. “I have indigo spots
on every inch of my body. I feel very icky.â€
illustrator - portfolio - Kuhn, Jesse - Zany Science Zeke spread from The Quirkles series-Zachary Zoop was full of zest. He had bright orange
hair that stood up all over his head. He wore denim
jeans with zippers and a blue jacket with double zeros
on it. The creatures could always hear Zachary a mile
off because he would make motor noises while riding
on his skateboard. He would say “Z-z-z-z-z-z-z-z-
zoom!†each time he would zip around a corner.
illustrator - portfolio - Kuhn, Jesse - Zany Science Zeke spread from The Quirkles series-Zany Science Zeke had heard enough. “Zachary Zoop,
you zip your lips. You are being mean to Ziffy Zebra. Go
home!â€

Zachary hung his head and looked as though he had
been zapped. Zany Zeke could tell Zachary wanted
something.

“Zachary Zoop, what is it you want?†asked Zany Zeke.

Zachary muttered, “Mrs. Zettle, the science teacher, told
me you did zany experiments, and there are many
interesting things you can make by mixing ingredients
in a science experiment. I want a real zinger
experiment for school tomorrow.â€
illustrator - portfolio - Kuhn, Jesse - Zany Science Zeke spread from The Quirkles series-Zany Science Zeke explained to Zachary and Ziffy that
science could be fun! Making zop was one of many
interesting science concoctions Zeke knew about. When
squeezed, zop would change from a solid to a liquid
and then back to a solid!
illustrator - portfolio - Kuhn, Jesse - Watery William spread from The Quirkles series-Watery William began to explain, “People, plants, and
animals all need water to live. Water is a home to some
creatures and affects our weather, too. Just like the
planet Earth, Quirksville’s surface is nearly three-
fourths water. Water is in rivers, lakes, and oceans. An
ocean has salt water and waves, a lake is surrounded by
land, and a river flows across the land and empties into
the ocean.â€
illustrator - portfolio - Kuhn, Jesse - Vinnie Volcano spread from The Quirkles series-After a very long search, Vinnie Volcano found Victor
Vet, Valerie Rabbit, and Vanessa Squirrel surrounded by
hot lava rocks. Lava was spewing violently.

Vinnie Volcano had to think fast. “What am I going to
do?†he thought. Suddenly, he had an idea.
illustrator - portfolio - Kuhn, Jesse - Friction Fred spread from The Quirkles series-Coach Foogle, the football coach of Quirksville, called
all the Foops together. Coach Foogle said, “We have
been looking forward to beating the Falcons. We must
figure out what to do so we do not have to forfeit the
game. Can anyone help?†

All the Foops yelled, “Friction Fred can!†

Friction Fred said, “Wait right here.â€
illustrator - portfolio - Kuhn, Jesse - Underwater Utley spread from The Quirkles series-Uzzy Umbrellabird did not understand. “Why not, Utley?
†asked Uzzy.

Underwater Utley explained, “Unfortunately, Uzzy, you
do not have gills. Fish, like all other animals, breathe
oxygen. Fish have gills that allow the oxygen to pass
from the water into their bloodstream. Uzzy, as a bird,
you get oxygen through your lungs.â€
illustrator - portfolio - Kuhn, Jesse - Ellie Electricity spread from The Quirkles series-Ellie Electricity excitedly jumped into her electric car
and drove past eleven exits before reaching Effie’s
house at the edge of town. Ellie was worried something
was extremely wrong. She did not know what to expect.
illustrator - portfolio - Kuhn, Jesse - X.E. Ecology spread from The Quirkles series-X.E. thought this was an excellent idea. By now Exeter
had recovered from his bicycle accident and was in a
much better mood. They decided to attend the art
extravaganza together. It had been a day with
unexpected surprises.
